FAMILY CONCERT
Musicians: A Team of Players January 25, 2009 at 1:00 PM
Playing in an orchestra is in many ways the same as playing on a sports team such as baseball, basketball, and football. Members of the orchestra not only play an instrument, but also play in a group or a section, like the brass, the winds, the strings, or the percussion. Some play in a specific group like the violas, the flutes, the trumpets, and the string basses. But, all play together with specific parts, or positions, to make the music come to life.
Members of the orchestra work together as a team with each person playing a specific part in the game of the music. As on a sports team, some players play a greater role in the game, like the quarterback, the pitcher, the defense team, and the center. In music, we call those types of roles concertos or solos. The Family Concert will explore the joy of musicians working as a team, playing and making music.
The Family Concert will introduce the audience to Bach's Concerto for Two Violins and Orchestra we'll see how musicians communicate with each other while playing as a team. Then will be Cecile Chaminade's Flute Concertino, which puts the spotlight on the flute; It is a work that allows the flutist to explore the many possibilities of the instrument and its lyrical qualities. The program concludes with selections from Bizet's L'Arlesienne Suite No.1, the Prelude and Carillon movements, which highlight several instruments and sections of the orchestra's team members - the saxophone and the harp in the Prelude and the French horns in the Carillon.
