2014Summer_200pxPlease accept our invitation to a Summer Garden Party at a gem of a countryside setting. You will be treated to wonderful music, great food and delicious refreshments in a garden landscape with stunning views of Skagit Bay and Puget Sound. It is all for a very special cause—supporting the Skagit Symphony and the musical education of our Skagit Valley children.

To make this event even more special, we have a matching fund drive. The Symphony has a commitment from a donor group to match this event’s contributions dollar for dollar up to $15,000.

Please attend and help us fulfill the mission of the Skagit Symphony and support its Youth Program.

Skagit Symphony Mission
Skagit Symphony’s primary mission is to contribute to the growth and appreciation of classical music in the community by performing a repertoire to the highest standard. The Symphony provides the opportunity for skilled musicians in our region to perform along with the orchestra, including soloists and local composers.

A secondary mission springs from the Symphony’s belief that each generation must preserve its cultural heritage and endeavors to pass that heritage musically to future generations. This is the guiding principle behind the Symphony’s Youth Program.

The Symphony’s mission is realized with a seasonal series of four concerts plus the School and Family concerts.

Skagit Symphony’s Youth Program
The Skagit Symphony Youth Program, or School Concert, was set in motion six years ago. Its mission is to expand the use of classical music as a teaching tool to encourage curiosity and interest not only in music, but also in history, geography and art.

Since its inception nearly 11,000 5th graders have attended a live concert at McIntyre Hall for which they were prepared through a coordinated effort by Symphony volunteers, classroom teachers and music specialists. The teaching tools include composer biographies, historical and geographical background information, pertinent art and listening links to the music. At the concert performed by the skilled volunteer orchestra, the conductor introduces the instruments and explains the music.

In recent years, the Valley’s public school 5th graders have filled McIntyre Hall for two back-to-back concerts. With the number of students exceeding the number of available seats, school attendance has been assigned on a first come/first served basis. The Youth Program schedules a repeat performance on the Sunday following the School Concert. This performance at McIntyre Hall, known as the Family Concert, has been offered to children, families and members of the community for the past several years. In 2014, the Youth Program, via the Family Concert, included outreach to private, parochial, and home school students as well as those public school 5th graders who were unable to attend the School Concert.
